Have you noticed it?
Probably not... at least, not like I have.
When you search for "Reactive Dog Training", "Puppy Training", or "Service Dog Training" on any social media platform, you'll find the following popular content - these are all examples I pulled at the time of writing:
3 Times to Use the Place Command
TOP 3 TIPS FOR THE REACTIVE DOG OWNER
GOT A REACTIVE DOG? Here's Four Things to Start Working On Today
5 WAYS TO ENTERTAIN YOUR REACTIVE DOG
You'll also find some of my content mixed in depending on platform :)
This is frustrating for me as a NOW dog trainer, who specializes in gentle & fair training methods with BOTH
Behavior Modification for extremely challenging, difficult, and sometimes dangerous dogs
Preventing unwanted behavior and raising puppies into perfect puppies and service dogs in training
But it's even more frustrating for my INNER-owner. . .
I get stressed for my dog's former behavior challenges we still struggled with despite spending thousands ($$$) on
positive reinforcement dog trainers
rewards-based balanced dog trainers
earning her Canine Good Citizen (CGC) at a local rewards-based training center
resources & products
All while trying to figure out how to stop biting, pushy/demanding behavior, hyper-arousal, over-excitement, resource guarding, and on-leash reactivity issues
All because I HAD ADVANCED TRAINING GOALS including being off-leash, agility training, having a CGC title, working around dogs, and service dog training goals CLOUDING MY JUDGEMENT... And no trainer tried to stop me on my quest for instant satisfaction
It's frustrating because all of these trainers are also business owners like me. We are all solopreneurs and entrepreneurs... we all have to find, acquire, and retain clients in this industry. . . and we use data to find you!
If there's one thing I know about my inner-owner and other owners, it's that YOU ARE DESPERATE for tips and tricks, and easy quick fixes for your dog's unwanted behavior.
BUT
What you see is a dog that has no impulse control
I see a dog. that is insecure about what's expected of it
You see that your dog won't listen to you around dogs
I see a dog that is taking a leadership role because you aren't
You see that dog won't stop barking at mail couriers
I see a dog that thinks that's their job because it makes the scary human go away
You see a dog that pulls on leash or reacts to triggers
I see a dog that doesn't feel connected to it's pack
AND
While you WANT a quick tip to addressing any of these behavior issues because its human nature to look for the path of least resistance
I KNOW that the only way to heal reactivity or prevent behavior issues is to work a comprehensive, custom training plan that's catered to your dog and it's specific issues, preferences, likes, dislikes, habits, history, etc. . .
And you will NEVER make progress with your dog's overall behavior or improve your quality of life together without addressing root causes and digging into your foundations and relationship to find and fill in the gaps
You need something stable to build on and grow from together.
And you don't get that from a list of 3-5 tricks or a 90 second REEL.
The thing all of these pieces of content are missing? CONTEXT:
Place Training is GREAT for building impulse control, IF AND ONLY IF YOU HAVE A FOUNDATION
Authentic Eye Contact is GREAT for building pack bond & connectedness, DURING COUNTER CONDITIONING
Recall is a SOCIAL boundary for dogs who ALREADY HAVE THEIR BIOLOGICAL & EMOTIONAL NEEDS MET
Some of these pieces of content are simply propaganda for the positive reinforcement and force free dog training community to misrepresent the safe, gentle, and fair use of training tools like slip leads, prong collars, and e-collars. Other's suggest that dogs do not need an alpha pack leader or oblige a social hierarchy complete with competent, calm, and confident parents. All is simply a marketing strategy to keep you buying what they are selling...
So why should you care?
Humans in-need of some service and people who are suffering with life difficulties (like difficult dogs, puppies, or service dog training) are easy targets to be manipulated, gaslit into trying things that do not work, and most importantly...
YOU ARE EASY TO MARKET TO
Don't forget when you are mindlessly scrolling that social media is a marketing tool and dog trainers/business owners have access to data which tells us
What is trendy in content creation
What type of content attracts the biggest audiences
How to use story-telling and fear to make a sale
How to grow our social media accounts by being relatable
and so much more
If you have a puppy, reactive dog, or service dog, you are either struggling with a behavior challenge or working towards a training goal. You are using your human instincts to do it, which means you're searching for
Tips to training my reactive dog
How to teach a loose leash walk
Tricks to stop leash pulling
How to train my puppy
How to train a service dog
Dog Training Tips
Looking for ways to get you there FASTER (no shame, its just part of being a human [instant gratification])
In this process, you make yourself vulnerable to people who are HAPPY to feed you want you want, in exchange for your loyal following and your business
The reason I don't do this? I don't post tips and tricks or host a public non-client membership page?
And I share the truth, even when it's uncomfortable
It's because of this:
I don't want you to follow me or any other trainer long-term (unless you enjoy it, are a supporter, or are a social media manager in this space)
I know tips & tricks only hold you back or make things worse
I know what you really need is deep lifestyle change which leads to permanent, life-long, sustainable results
All of my clients have worked with trainers BEFORE me both positive reinforcement dog trainers and balanced dog trainers trainers...
Some of my clients have actually worked with 3-4 Trainers and purchased a well-known dog training membership subscription before finding me. . .
So no, I don't wan't you to FOLLOW ME. . . I want you to join the pack!
BUT I WON'T TRY TO CONVINCE YOU WITH TIPS OR TRICKS
OR THINGS THAT COULD MAKE YOUR LIFE HARDER/WORSE
You have to fully commit to a better life with your dog
THEN we can figure out what you and your dog ACTUALLY need to be successful!!
I only work with the MOST committed dog owners who are DETERMINED to do the VERY BEST thing for their fur baby
These are owners who KNOW something is missing in their life with their dog and know that no other trainer has figured it out yet
Owners who know that tips, tricks, and membership pages aren't cutting it anymore. . . and patience is wearing thin.
Owners ready for full healing in 4-6 months and loving their lives with their dogs, within 0-2 weeks...
So they stop scrolling social media, and they contact me.
I get them on the right track, helping give their dog R.E.S.T.
And the best part?
Many of my clients stop scrolling, consuming meaningless dog training content, and START LOVING THEIR LIFE WITH THEIR DOGS INSTEAD
+ following certified dog nutritionists instead, to stay informed on the latest non-veterinary trends
So that is why you need to STOP SCROLLING!
It's just holding you back!!!
I actually gave away my #1 TIP FOR REACTIVE DOGS, puppies, and service dog training a long time ago . . .
And YOU *PROBABLY* IGNORED IT!!! Because you are human. . .

But I bet you are listening now - so here it is
